Gunther has been undefeated in singles action since tapping out John Cena in December at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Not anymore.
“The Ring General’s” dominance ended Thursday as WWE kicked off its European Summer Tour in Liverpool.
Facing Cody Rhodes in a Tables Match, Gunther ate a Cross Rhodes before being thrown into a table for the finish. Rhodes is the first man to beat Gunther one-on-one since CM Punk defeated the Austrian powerhouse for the World Heavyweight Championship last August at SummerSlam.
Rhodes and Gunther will meet again this Sunday at Clash In Italy, WWE’s next premium live event. There, the stakes will be much bigger as the Undisputed WWE Championship will be on the line. Additionally, their match will take place during the show’s first hour, which will air free on ESPN.
Though Sunday’s showdown won’t feature a special stipulation like fans saw in Liverpool, the two likely used Thursday’s bout to work out some spots before they meet in front of the world.
The last time these two went at it was at Crown Jewel in 2024, where Rhodes beat Gunther to become the first Crown Jewel Champion.
