Tina Louise’s Last TV Role Was A Guest Appearance In A Forgotten ’90s Crime Show

If you loved the charming escapades of the “Gilligan’s Island” castaways, chances are you won’t be interested in seeing Ginger the movie star going down in a hail of bullets. Yes, in a turn worlds apart from her work on Sherwood Schwartz’s hit sitcom, Ginger Grant actor Tina Louise did indeed play a character who was shot down in the little-known crime action series “L.A. Heat.” It was about as far from the isle as she’d been since playing a sadistic prison guard in 1976’s “Nightmare in Badham County.”

Several actors replaced Louise as Ginger after the original “Gilligan’s Island” series was canceled. But Louise will always be the first and best. Today, at 92, she’s the only surviving member of the “Gilligan’s Island” cast and last appeared on-screen in the 2019 film “Tapestry.” Her final TV role (for now, at least) came two decades prior in “L.A. Heat” — and it was a heck of a farewell for this small screen legend.

If you’ve never heard of this show, that’s because it aired on TNT back in 1999 for a couple months before disappearing altogether. In fact, “L.A. Heat” almost didn’t even make it to air in the United States, having been produced back in 1996 before failing to secure a network distribution deal. As such, the rest of the world was treated to “L.A. Heat” before those stateside, with the show airing in multiple countries prior to making its TNT debut in March 1999. When it did finally hit the airwaves domestically, TNT inexplicably ran a few episodes from the first and second seasons before wrapping things up two months later in May 2019. Not the most illustrious legacy, really. But at least the show could claim to have hosted Louise in one of her most outlandish roles.

Tina Louise made her movie debut alongside a Western legend back in 1958 and her TV debut in an episode of “Studio One” in 1956. At the time, though, she surely couldn’t have envisaged going down in a gunfight for her final TV appearance.

“L.A. Heat” (not to be confused with the 1989 direct-to-home-media film of the same name that’s about as well-remembered as the TV show) starred Wolf Larson and Steven Williams as two robbery/homicide LAPD detectives. Despite their very different personal lives, they prove to be a crack team on the streets of Los Angeles. But Louise was almost too much for the buddy cop team.

The actor appears in Season 2, Episode 15, “In Harm’s Way.” She plays Patricia Ludwigson, a crook who, along with her adult son Johnny Claringer Jr. (Wade Williams), has been executing heists around Los Angeles and stacking up bodies in the process. Yes, “L.A. Heat” cast Louise as a violent criminal who doesn’t think twice about taking lives and loves to verbally abuse her son. In the very first heist gone wrong, Patricia casually blows away a good samaritan who tries to foil her and Johnny’s robbery. It’s delightfully twisted.

However, that same good samaritan, Gary (Steven Meek), was the boyfriend of Annie Mason (Jessica Cushman), a forensic expert who was on-hand to witness her beloved being gunned down by Patricia. So, Chase and August investigate and eventually track down Patricia and Johnny after they try to pull one final job. It all culminates in Patricia firing round after round at the detectives before she’s ultimately taken down by Chase. Clearly, Louise was having a grand old time in the role, and I can’t blame her.

Though she never became a Hollywood megastar, Tina Louise had many significant roles besides Ginger Grant throughout her career. Prior to her “Gilligan’s Island” debut in 1964, Louise starred in the must-watch ’50s Western “Day of the Outlaw,” as well as multiple stage productions. Moreover, she followed up her time on Sherwood Schwartz’s sitcom by playing Charmaine Wimpiris in “The Stepford Wives” and guest spots on several well-known series, including “The Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Dallas.” But it’s safe to say that none of those guest spots were quite as enjoyably off-the-wall as her portrayal of Patricia Ludwigson on “L.A. Heat.”

Sadly, it doesn’t look as though her episode, “In Harm’s Way,” was ever actually shown on U.S. television. TNT ran a few episodes from both Seasons 1 and 2 of “L.A. Heat,” but it never aired Louise’s criminal rampage. Luckily, the entire series is available to watch on Prime Video at no extra cost to subscribers. Well, it will cost you your time, which, depending on how you feel about short-lived cheesy ’90s buddy cop series, may or may not be worth it. But you can always just watch Ginger shoot her way across Los Angeles and call it a day. If anything, we owe it to this TV legend to make sure her final small screen performance is seen more widely.
