Neither WWE or AAA may know what to do with Dominik Mysterio, but we all know what to do with a fresh batch of pro wrestling rumors, am I right?
And today’s top rumor…
Last weekend’s big Noche de los Grandes event from WWE’s AAA Lucha Libre brand was sold on the main event that gave it its name. It’s also destined to be in the “show of the year” conversation simply because some are already calling its main event — the lucha de apuesta for the Grande Americano name and mask between the Original version of the character (played by Chad Gable) and the version who was introduced while Gable was injured, and with whom Mexico subsequently fell in love (played by Ludwig Kaiser) — the “match of the year”.
But some still noticed a prominent name missing from the Noche de los Grandes line-up: AAA Mega champion Dominik Mysterio. In fact, Dirty Dom’s absence was enough of a topic that his godfather Konnan addressed it on his Keeping It 100 podcast this week.
Konnan didn’t say much, as he didn’t want to “get heat” with Undertaker and the AAA creative team. But he did agree that as a booker Taker is “one of those guys that likes to protect the belt and keep the championship matches very important”. Konnan also didn’t rule out the possibility a Dom/Americano Mega championship match could be on the horizon, although he pointed out the face reaction Mysterio gets in Mexico despite still playing a heel could be an issue.
I doubt Taker gave much consideration to putting Dom or AAA’s top belt on Noche de los Grandes once it became clear how big the Americanos mask match would be — why risk overshadowing your superstar champ while putting over the promotion’s only other big star? Especially since the younger Mysterio’s seemed to have his dad’s luck when it comes to injuries over the past couple years. Dom’s only wrestled three times since WrestleMania, but we think he’s been healthy since getting out of concussion protocol after his last AAA Mega title defense in March.
One of those three was Monday ona house show in France though, so hopefully we’ll see more El Sucio de los Sucios soon… in AAA, and on Raw.
More rumors!
- Seems pretty obvious, especially after Mercedes Moné return on Dynamite last night, but Fightful Select reports Moné’s comeback will play a significant part in the top AEW storylines and the Women’s championship scene. Just cause it’s obvious doesn’t mean it’s not true. Fightful also passed along a less obvious item: AEW always knew Moné would be out past April’s Dynasty PPV.
- On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer chimed in on the discussion about AAA’s next TV deal. He says “the whole reason” WWE acquired AAA “was to get TV rights and sponsorships in the United States” because there’s more money to be made on it in the U.S. compared to in Mexico. Meltzer also speculated the reason night one of Triplemania is being held in an 800-1,200 seat venue in Las Vegas is so TKO can showcase the product off to sponsors and television & media execs who might not want to travel to Mexico.
- Answering a reader-submitted question about Ilja Dragunov in a recent Q&A, Fightful Select reports Dragunov is publicly training at Natalya and TJ Wilson’s Dungeon in Florida, something he wouldn’t do if he were hurt. The outlet reminded us Dragunov hasn’t been on WWE television since WrestleMania, and reports it hasn’t heard about any creative plans involving him.
- Aria Bennett, a WWE Developmental talent who debuted for the company in June 2024 and tore her ACL sometime after her last NXT house show match in April of last year, looks to be done with the company. The Instagram for Ajiea Lea Hargrave (Bennett’s real name) now reads “former WWE” in the bio. f4wonline.com’s Bryan Alvarez says the former NCAA All-American in gymnastics “was actually cut from NXT in late April.”
