34BigThings no longer Embraced

34BigThings, the development studio behind the Redout series as well as Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, has announced it has once again become fully independent.
The Italian team was acquired by Embracer Group back in 2020, but its co-founder, Valerio Di Donato, has now bought back shares from the holdings company. This means 34BigThings is now operating under its own power once again.
Di Donato, alongside fellow co-founder Giuseppe Enrico Franchi and chief financial officer Daniel Giagnorio, will lead the studio.
Its time under Embracer isn’t viewed in a bad light by the team, though. Di Donato says it allowed 34BigThings to grow to become Italy’s second-biggest studio (the biggest being Milestone).
“This provided us with invaluable structure and stability, while offering a first-hand look at the complexities of balancing internal development with external stakeholders,” he said.
“Being independent means being free to pick and choose our own projects, freely discard what doesn’t work, allocate production resources the way we see fit, and being quicker in seizing external opportunities without having to wait for approval,” said Franchi.
Excitingly, 34BigThings has plenty of work in the pipeline, and is already teasing the announcement of its next game.
“Later this year, we will be announcing a major title built on one of the most important, beloved, and revered intellectual properties in the world,” reads a statement from the studio. “And that’s just the start: our production pipeline is fully charged, with another major title scheduled for 2027 followed by another groundbreaking project slated for 2028.”
So, it’s working on an existing IP, and it sounds like a big one, too. I’m really interested to see what this turns out to be; fortunately, it seems there won’t be a massive wait to find out.
