Things were going entirely too well for the 2026

Official Trailer for Western ‘A Prayer for the Dying’ with John C. Reilly

A Prayer for the Dying Trailer

“We need to quarantine now. The whole town!” Quiver Distribution has debuted the latest official trailer for the indie western film titled A Prayer for the Dying, marking the feature debut of Norwegian-American filmmaker Dara Van Dusen. This first premiered at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year (watch that first teaser) but didn’t stop by anyone else. Not a remake, based on the book of the same name, and not the same as the 1987 British film also titled A Prayer for the Dying with Mickey Rourke. This new film is set in 1870 in Friendship – a small Wisconsin town, made up of Scandinavian settlers, is still suffering from the repercussions of the recent Civil War. So when faced with a new and even deadlier threat, one man is forced to make a harrowing choice: save his young family or defend the community that gave him a second chance at life and meaning. A Prayer for the Dying is described as “powerful account of the choices we must make when disaster strikes and everything we hold dear, including faith, family, community, is shaken to its core.” With Johnny Flynn as Jacob Hansen, John C. Reilly as Doc, Kristine Kujath Thorp, Gustav Lindh, Hilton Pelser, Andrew Whipp. Based on Stewart O’Nan’s novel. A stylish thriller about illness paranoia.

Via Berlinale: “In 1870, the town of Friendship, Wisconsin, is enduring a dry, hot summer. The small town revolves around Jacob Hansen (Johnny Flynn), a hero of the American Civil War who, in spite of his many accomplishments, is unable to cast off the violence and darkness of his past as a soldier. Feeling compelled to atone for the wrongs he has committed, Jacob takes on the responsibility not only of providing for his young family but also of serving as sheriff, undertaker, & pastor for Friendship. He thus considers the town to be under his protection – a claim that comes to haunt him when Friendship is hit by an epidemic that the town’s doctor (John C. Reilly) cannot contain. As every decision becomes a choice between two evils, Jacob is increasingly haunted by his war-ridden past. It is unclear how much longer he can continue in his self-imposed role as protector or whether he will ever be able to forgive himself for what he’s done.

A Prayer for the Dying is written and directed by American filmmaker Dara Van Dusen based in Oslo, Norway, making her feature directorial debut after a few short films previously. Produced by Dyveke Bjørkly Graver; made by Eye Eye Pictures, with The Bureau, Garagefilm Intl., Film I Väst. This originally premiered at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival playing in the Perspectives section. Quiver Distribution will release Van Dusen’s A Prayer for the Dying film in select US theaters starting October 9th, 2026 this fall. Look good?
