“What is the image of the future that you see?” “We don’t teach it. It teaches itself…” Neon has revealed the first teaser trailer for the film Artificial, directed by master Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino as his latest after Challengers, Queer, & After the Hunt. Artificial is basically The Social Network but for OpenAI (creators of ChatGPT which is the worst btw) and its founder/CEO Sam Altman. It’s premiering at the 2026 New York Film Festival then playing at London next before hitting theaters in December at the end of this year. Starring Andrew Garfield as Altman, Anora’s Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, plus Mark Rylance as Geoffrey Hinton. NYFF adds: “Anchored by brilliant lead performances, Guadagnino’s thrilling, funny, and very human drama propels audiences through the two decades of machine learning research that have brought us to our current AI crisis point.” Also stating that “Guadagnino’s film moves like a machine in unstoppable, constant motion—a history being written as we’re watching it.” I am so in! A quick glimpse at just a bit of footage, but more than enough to send this right to the top of my most anticipated list for 2026.
Here’s the first teaser trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial, direct from Neon’s YouTube:

Intro from NYFF: “The stakes couldn’t be higher in Luca Guadagnino’s thrilling, funny, and very human Artificial, a drama of immense moral urgency that propels the viewer through the two decades of machine learning research & technocratic recklessness that have brought us to our current [artificial intelligence] AI crisis point. Back in 2003, Soviet-born computer scientist Ilya Sutskever (Anora’s Yura Borisov) began studying artificial neural networks under the University of Toronto professor Geoffrey ‘Godfather of AI’ Hinton (Mark Rylance). A decade later, while employed by Google, Sutskever fatefully crosses paths with a young entrepreneur named Sam Altman (Andrew Garfield), the eventual co-founder & CEO of OpenAI.“
Artificial is directed by the acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, director of The Protagonists, Melissa P, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All, Challengers, and Queer, and After the Hunt previously, as well as a few docs including Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams and Joie de vivre recently. The screenplay is written by Simon Rich. Produced by Jeffrey Clifford, Jennifer Fox, Luca Guadagnino, David Heyman, Simon Rich. This is premiering at the 2026 New York Film Festival this fall. Neon will then debut Guadagnino’s Artificial in select US theaters starting on December 25th, 2026, on Christmas Day, later this year with more cinemas in January 2027. First impression? Look any good?
