Watch: Becca Tilley and Hayley Kiyoko Engaged After 7 Years of Dating
Hayley Kiyokolikes girls like boys do.
And she announced it more than a decade ago with her 2015 hit song “Girls Like Girls.” Now, the Lemonade Mouth star shared what she would do if she could meet her younger self during that chapter
“I would give her a big hug and hope that she had more self-confidence and self-love because we’re so deserving of loving ourselves.” Hayley exclusively told E! News at the Asian American Foundation’s 2026 Heritage Month Awards Dinner in May. “It should not be this hard to love ourselves.”
Indeed, the 35-year-old has come a long way from the song’s release.
“It’s been a really beautiful journey because at the time, I was uncomfortable with who I was,” she admitted. “Now I’ve been on stage singing ‘Girls Like Girls’ waving the rainbow flag.”
In addition to being a beloved song among the queer community, “Girls Like Girls” also inspired her upcoming film of the same name, which comes out in theaters on June 19.
The movie—just like the song’s music video—follows new girl in town Coley (Maya da Costa) as she explores budding romantic feelings for her friend Sonya (Myra Molloy) while navigating heteronormative expectations in their small neighborhood.
“I’m just so honored and excited for the community to get to see Girls Like Girls in theaters,” Hayley shared. “For it to be my directorial debut, nothing will be more special than this moment and this cultural moment for us during such a divisive time.”
As she put it, “We need queer joy.”

For the “Determinate” singer, that also means embracing her fiancée era with Becca Tilley, with whom she’s been for over seven years.
“It’s really magical,” she raved. “I get why people, when they get engaged, they’re constantly posting photos of themselves because love is so special.”
“To find a partner that really sees you for who you are,” she continued, “and to get to celebrate that is awesome.”
As for where the couple stands with their wedding plans nearly one year after announcing their engagement?
“We’re enjoying our engaged life,” Hayley teased, “but we’ll figure it out once the movie comes out.”
