“An extinction event is coming – the mountain of fire is famished, so we must offer you into its magma.” Uh oh! Netflix has unveiled their official trailer for the uber-ambitious film Sacrifice, an especially provocative eco-warrior thriller from French filmmaker Romain Gavras as his first English-language feature. It will finally open in October after first premiering at TIFF a year ago. At an elite fundraising gala, celebrities and socialites find themselves in danger when armed activists storm the underground venue in pursuit of a relic that could unlock supernatural powers. This film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Joan, an eco-warrior who takes hostage this special rich person event held inside a stunning marble mine. “Thought-provoking, visually arresting, and powered by a kinetic original script co-written with Will Arbery (also of Succession), Gavras’ Sacrifice is a satirical action-adventure & visually explosive epic led by a magnetic star-studded ensemble.” The main cast features Anya Taylor-Joy as Joan, Chris Evans as Mike Tyler, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Sam Richardson, Yung Lean, Ambika Mod, and Charli XCX, plus even John Malkovich. Reviews are all over the map – some hate it, some think it’s okay, some dig it (here’s my thoughts). Whatever you think, you just have to watch it and make up your own mind about it. The volcano demands an offering.

After the fiery death of their mother, Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her siblings, driven by a mysterious volcanic prophecy, believe it is their duty to cleanse the Earth. Their radical group hijacks a glamorous charity gala and acquires three unlikely hostages for a sacrificial ritual: their hero, movie star Mike Tyler (Chris Evans); their villain, pragmatically cold billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel); and their lover, an unlucky performer named Katie (Ambika Mod). As the party night descends into chaos, both an inward journey and an outward adventure ensue, where the line between performance and belief, salvation and sacrifice, begins to blur. Sacrifice is directed by the acclaimed French genre filmmaker Romain Gavras, director of the films Our Day Will Come, The World Is Yours, and Athena previously, plus lots of music videos and a few short films. The screenplay is written by Will Arbery & Romain Gavras. Produced by Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, Romain Gavras, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, and Giorgos Karnavas.
