Biltmore Hotel Ex-employee Caught Stealing Thousands In Lobster Tails
A Biltmore Hotel ex-employee allegedly stole nearly $8,000 worth of food from the hotel kitchen. Diego Alfredo Medina Acosta reportedly stole thousands of dollars worth of lobster tails from the food area, according to CBS News. He was arrested on Monday, October 5, and charged with grand theft.
Acosta allegedly stole 192 lobster tails from the hotel kitchen. Not only that, but he also stole over $600 worth of pork bellies, per NBC 6 South Florida. After the Biltmore’s head chef and director of security noticed that food was missing from the hotel, he caught Acosta on video removing lobster tails on a cart. Furthermore, he was caught removing more food from the area.
“Apparently, he has a taste for lobster tails,” said Judge Mindy Glazer during a court hearing.
Acosta Stole Argentinian Chorizo Sausages & Coconut Milk
Acosta also stole over $50 worth of Argentinian chorizo sausage. In addition, the ex-employee allegedly took $39.88 worth of gnocchi potatoes, nearly $90 of shrimp, and $137.40 worth of calamari.
Additionally, Acosta stole 30 center-cut snappers and $98 worth of coconut milk. Subsequently, the 37-year-old was arrested and charged with first-degree grand theft, per NBC 6 South Florida. The native of Uruguay is now subject to an immigration hold, and his bond was set at $2,500.
Acosta resigned from the Biltmore. Additionally, he was ordered to stay away from the hotel. Tom Prescott, President & CEO of the Biltmore, released a statement about the theft.
“The Biltmore takes great pride in being recognized as one of South Florida’s Top Workplaces and in employing talented and dedicated professionals who uphold the highest standards of hospitality and integrity. We have zero tolerance for theft or any conduct that compromises the trust placed in our colleagues and/or organization,” Prescott wrote. “We welcomed that an independent investigation corroborated the findings of our internal investigation on this matter. The Biltmore remains committed to providing an exceptional level of service and experience for our guests while maintaining a workplace built on trust, accountability, and respect. As the matter is now with law enforcement, any additional questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Coral Gables Police Department.”
