In a week of pitched fights over the direction of and influences inside the Democratic Party, one of the clearest signals sent by voters Tuesday was along generational lines.
In Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District, Luke Bronin, the former mayor of Hartford, soundly defeated 14-term incumbent John Larson in a race that was defined more by their 30-year age gap than any policy differences.
Bronin, who is 47, made an argument for a new crop of leaders inside the party, framing his campaign as a response to Democrats’ losses in 2024 after President Joe Biden ended his race for re-election amid concerns about his age.
The 78-year-old Larson was poised to be influential inside a potential Democratic majority and has led the party on efforts to expand Social Security benefits and fortify the program into the future.
But a medical episode on the House floor last February, a freeze-up later attributed by his office to a “complex partial seizure,” quickly became fodder for Democrats frustrated with Washington and what is one of the oldest Congresses in U.S. history.
To be sure, the Democratic Party in this moment may be even more consumed by the fight between the insurgent left and moderates over its message and leaders through primary season.
The narrow victory of progressive Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate primary last week and this week’s results in the competitive Wisconsin gubernatorial race between a democratic socialist state lawmaker and a centrist Milwaukee County executive will add fuel to arguments from both sides.
While progressives can win the debate within their own party, can they win competitive districts and states and persuade independent and swing voters?
Those answers might not come until November.
