WWE’s first-ever Women’s United States champion Chelsea Green has been the target of internet judgment in the past for speaking favorably about controversial wrestling icons and representing the company at non-partisan-in-name-only events like the one UFC held at the White House last month.
But when she was accused of secretly supporting United States President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement after joining with Tiffany Stratton to recreate a WNBA meme on the episode of SmackDown that premiered last Friday (July 3).
Pointing at someone that way, and continuing to do so for a while (22 seconds to be exact) as they move around, is something Sophie Cunningham of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever went viral for when she did it to the Phoenix Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner in a recent game. Because it involved the Caitlyn Clark’s team, and because Cunningham is white and Bronner is black, the taunt has become part of the discourse about race in women’s basketball. It also become even an even bigger talking point since the White House posted a video comparing Trump’s point to Cunningham’s, and Cunningham told reporters she hasn’t thought “twice about it” and that the President’s offices was just “another group posting about it” using the meme.
Green posted a clip of the point, probably thinking they could tap into the trend without knowledge of its connotations — or at least hopeful that the negative associations wouldn’t be associated with them. If that was what she was thinking, Chelsea was wrong. And after much flak, posted this statement:
I can handle you saying things about my looks or my talent but what you won’t do is spread lies about my political views. Since you’re so interested in spreading misinformation, here are the facts:
• I am a Canadian citizen
• I can’t vote in America
• I am not MAGA
• I am a liberal / democrat
• When I become a citizen, I will vote for a president who believes in equal human rights
And with that, she deleted her account from the app.
