The Crash Lucha Libre promotion has suspended Alberto Rodríguez—better known as Alberto Del Rio during his time in WWE and Alberto El Patrón elsewhere—following his recent arrest on domestic violence charges.

Del Rio was arrested Monday (April 6) by police in Mexico on allegations of domestic violence against his wife, according to multiple news reports.

On Wednesday, The Crash Lucha Libre released a statement announcing it has suspended Del Rio indefinitely following his arrest.

The statement read: ”The Crash Lucha Libre is a company with values that promotes the sport in a family-friendly way, and condemns all acts of violence outside of sports, for this reason we will suspend Alberto Del Rio ‘El Patrón’ from our programming after the events that recently occurred.”

Alberto’s wife had reportedly called 911 on the wrestling star before filing a complaint that alleged he beat her. The Mexican sports website La Afición wrote that responding officers reported injuries visible on the face and arms of Alberto’s wife when they arrested the 48-year-old wrestler.

After he was detained by State Civil Guard officers, Del Rio was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of San Luis Potosí (FGE) to face charges.

The attorney general’s office later released a statement that said Del Rio’s case would be overseen by a prosecutor’s office that specializes in cases involving women, families, and sex offenses.

The office wrote that the victim said an argument broke out between her and her husband, identified only as Alberto ’N’ in the statement, which “led the defendant to commit various acts of physical and verbal abuse against his partner.”

The statement added that the special prosecutor’s office “will be responsible for properly compiling the investigative file and presenting him before the judicial authority at the initial hearing, where he will have to answer for the charges against him.”

During his time in WWE, which began in 2009, Del Rio won the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship twice each. He also won the 2011 Royal Rumble and the 2011 Money in the Bank ladder match.

In 2014, he was let go from WWE following reports of an altercation with a company employee. He returned in 2015 before he was granted his released a year later after reportedly being unhappy with creative decisions.

Alberto has mostly wrestled in Mexico in recent years. When WWE bought AAA last year, he was the reigning AAA Mega Champion, but he soon lost the title and did not appear on WWE programming at the time. His stint in AAA also ended shortly after the WWE takeover, and he hasn’t competed in the company since the summer of 2025.

Del Rio has faced allegations of violence against women in the past. In a 2020 interview, his former girlfriend Saraya Bevis (aka Paige in WWE) spoke about being the victim of physical abuse without naming Alberto, but he responded to TMZ that she had abused him.

Also in 2020, Alberto was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting and beating another former girlfriend. He was later indicated by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault, but those charges were dropped when a witness in the case couldn’t be found before the trial.

Del Rio has denied the previous allegations against him.
