Is it time for a check-up?

A check-up from Dr. Mario is long overdue, but there are apparently some signs of life via a trademark renewal.
It’s specifically for Dr. Mario World, the mobile title Nintendo shut down in 2021. The free-to-play puzzle game was originally released in 2019, and it’s supposedly the first time it’s been acknowledged since the service ended.
This information was spotted and shared by Mike Odyssey on social media (via My Nintendo News):
“Nintendo just filed for a NEW/UPDATE Trademark for Dr. Mario World. A game released on mobile and discontinued by Nintendo.”
As mentioned in the past, video game trademarks and filings don’t necessarily guarantee an announcement or reveal is on the way. For Nintendo, it’s often part of everyday business operations to protect its intellectual properties.
And before anyone gets too excited, one theory suggests this could be a response to a preservation group attempting to revive the mobile title. There have also been scenarios where trademark renewals and updates do lead to something more. We’ve seen this with multiple games and series in recent times.
Earlier this year, a trademark refresh for the 3DS eShop title Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure was also spotted.
If you do want to revisit the Dr. Mario series, the Switch Online ‘Nintendo Classics’ subscription service offers select titles. It most recently added Dr. Mario & Puzzle League for the GBA library in July.
