Plus impressions for RE2 and 3
Digital Foundry has provided its tech review for Resident Evil 4 on Switch 2, while also sharing some brief impressions of RE2 and RE3.
Starting with RE4, it’s noted that the game has a “range of downgrades” compared to its PS5 counterpart, which isn’t particularly surprising. Some local light sources don’t cast real-time shadows in some situations, though the shadows that are there are at least at a similar resolution.
Some reflections are also missing, while technology like volumetric lighting isn’t quite as impressive, casting larger and blurrier shafts of light. Textures have seen some downgrades, but texture resolution is about on par with PS5. Foliage also lacks some of the density seen on PS5, while enemies in the distance run at reduced rates.

Naturally, visuals are a lot more in line with what you’d see on the PS4. It’s worth noting that the game was originally developed with the PS5 in mind, but Capcom announced a previous-gen port prior to its original release.
As for performance. RE4 is gunning for 60fps and manages to hit it fairly consistently, though there are dips into the 50s during busier moments, while some combat set pieces can even push it down into the 40s. DF states that this is a great example of a game that would probably benefit from a locked 40fps frame rate at launch.
Moving on to RE2 and 3, since these games were originally built for PS4, they hold up a lot better on Switch 2. Visuals don’t take much of a hit, but it’s noted that the gamma can look a little off in some scenes. Meanwhile, though you can certainly notice a few dips in frame rate, you can expect a much more consistent 60fps when compared to RE4.
We reviewed all three games here on Nintendo Life, awarding RE2 a 9/10, RE3 a 6/10, and RE4 a 9/10.
