Watch: NYC Store Art of Play Responds to Kelly Clarkson’s Claim
Since U Been keeping up with the Kelly Clarkson and Art of Play saga, here’s the latest update.
Days after the “Since U Been Gone” singer put the Brooklyn toy store on blast for how they allegedly treated her during an Oct. 10 visit, security footage shows what went down on Clarkson’s trip that caused all this drama to take flight.
In the footage (which doesn’t include audio) obtained and reviewed by journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre on Oct. 13, Clarkson entered the store donned in a yellow T-shirt, baseball cap and jeans while carrying a backpack. The 44-year-old—mom to River, 12, and Remington, 10, with late ex Brandon Blackstock—leisurely looks around the store before getting the attention of a shopkeeper to inquire about the infamous ‘Molly’ singing bird that was hanging on the store’s wall.
The duo has a quick conversation—lasting less than a minute—before Kelly appeared to dismiss herself and walk in another direction of the store. Later, she makes her way to the front of the store, at which point she appears to address the person working behind the counter before making a swift exit.
According to Torre’s Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Clarkson was only in the store for “about four minutes.”
As people around the country have now come to understand, however, the brief visit left an impression—so much so Clarkson took to social media within minutes of leaving the store to air her grievances.
“Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me,” Clarkson wrote in an Oct. 10 post on X. “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale. But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman.”

Later, the American Idol alum slammed the store’s claim that the item she had inquired about was not for sale.
“So, the whole conversation we had when I asked you if it was for sale whilst pointing to the price tag hanging on the wall with the title Singing Bird didn’t happen,” Clarkson wrote in a subsequent X post, “as you elevator eyed me saying in a condescending tone ‘yes, it’s for sale but it costs 15,000 dollars so if you’d like me to find something comparable for you I can.’”
In the days since the incident, Art of Play has made several public statements regarding the incident and one of its co-owners Adam Rubin has called the saga “an insane misunderstanding.”
“If this tweetstorm had not happened, we wouldn’t have realized there was a negative interaction in the shop; it was that undramatic,” Rubin told New York magazine in an interview published Oct. 13. “We treated her like a normal person, but apparently that didn’t live up to her expectations.”
As for what the future for ‘Molly’ the singing bird holds? Rubin admitted the saga has, at least, made her even more priceless.
“We’ve raised the price due to popular demand,” Rubin added. “It now costs $15 million.”
