Watch: ‘DWTS’ Pro Val Chmerkovskiy Shares How He’s Teaching His Son “Blue Collar” Work Ethic
Val Chmerkovskiy always wants his son to put his best foot forward.
While the Dancing With the Stars pro admitted that his and wife Jenna Johnson‘s 3-year-old Rome doesn’t yet “comprehend” how they’re living out their dreams on the ABC show, he said the couple is already trying to lead by example and instill a strong work ethic in him.
“He loves music and dance. He loves watching us perform,” Chmerkovskiy told E! News in an exclusive interview after the Oct. 13 episode. “It’s important to see his parents work hard and have a blue-collar approach to this artistry thing.”
And that’s why he and Johnson—who are competing with Jenna Dewan and Harry Shum Jr., respectively, on season 35—have brought Rome along with them on tour and in the studio.
“He would be here tonight if it was allowed. Unfortunately, kids are not allowed,” Chmerkovskiy explained. “But it’s a beautiful thing, and to set that example as best as we could in this space—which is a pretty weird, fun, crazy space—I think is important.”
And having Rome come to rehearsals also means he’s developed a bond with Dewan behind the scenes.
“He is the cutest kid,” the Step Up actress told E!. “Rome is the wise old soul. He’s special, and I have witnessed his dance parties.”
She quipped, “He’s a good dancer, shocking to no one.”
Likewise, Dewan’s kids Everly, 13 and Callum, 6—who she shares with ex Channing Tatum and fiancé Steve Kazee, respectively—have been by her side as she stars on both DWTS and The Rookie.
“Being a mom is always my No. 1 priority,” she shared. “And yet, doing both the shows together, my kids are being so amazing and so patient. They’re fully on this ride with me. They’re so excited.”
In fact, Dewan said Callum was crying “happy tears” after she and Chmerkovskiy earned 36 points—tying them in first place on the leader board—for their Paso Doble to Lady Gaga‘s song “Bad Romance.”
But her youngest also got in his feels after Guillermo Rodriguez was eliminated later in the evening, with Dewan noting, “My son is literally in tears over there that Guillermo went home, because he’s such a fan.”
