Official Trailer for ‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable’ – Crazy Story Doc

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable Trailer

“Would you ever do it again?” Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a new documentary film titled The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, a fascinating story about the Wu-Tang Clan and one fan getting into their inner circle. This doc premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year under the simpler title just The Disciple, and has played at other festivals this year as well. The true story of an outsider whose relentless determination catapults him into the Wu-Tang Clan’s inner circle, where ambition and creativity converge to record an album poised to ignite global controversy. It’s about the infamous album that only rich people can own because there is only one copy of it. The film traces the decades-long journey of Dutch-Moroccan rapper & producer Cilvaringz, who transformed himself from the group’s most devoted fan into the unlikeliest of disciples to his childhood heroes, including RZA, whose mentorship shapes the odyssey that follows. The result is Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a 31-track secret album packaged in an ornate, handcrafted silver box. Only one copy will ever legally exist. But this is a film with a more upbeat message: “Ultimately, I think it asks us to consider what we can do with the time we have — and how we can use it to create something meaningful, ambitious and, hopefully, something that makes people feel good.” 🎧 Enjoy.

Here’s the official trailer for Joanna Natasegara’s doc The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, from YouTube:

“I think The Disciple ultimately focuses on what happens when you put your mind to something and work towards the seemingly impossible. But innately, a disciple requires a master, and the film also reveals The RZA’s legendary ability to mentor those around him and bring out the best in them. His gift is not to create clones, but to encourage each of his mentees to become the best version of themselves. He gave Cilvaringz that chance after witnessing his tenacity and drive, and together they made music history.” –Director Joanna Natasegara

True story of an outsider whose relentless determination catapults him into the Wu-Tang Clan’s inner circle, where ambition and creativity converge to record an album destined to ignite global controversy. Oscar-winning producer Joanna Natasegara makes her feature debut, tracing the decades-long journey of Dutch-Moroccan rapper & producer Cilvaringz, who transformed himself from the group’s most devoted fan into the unlikeliest of disciples to his childhood heroes, including The RZA, whose mentorship shapes the odyssey that follows. That journey culminates in Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a 31-track album in an ornate, handcrafted silver box and auctioned to the highest bidder in 2015. Only one copy will ever legally exist. Its scarcity is a form of protest, and an argument that music still holds intrinsic worth as art in a digital age. The result is one of the most controversial artifacts of our time that sparked conversations about technology, creation and ownership. It’s also a story about how far one outsider went to belong. 🎤

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable is a documentary film both directed and produced by the award-winning doc producer / filmmaker Joanna Natasegara (of Virunga, The White Helmets, The Edge of Democracy, The Dating Game) making her feature directorial debut with this film. Also produced by Abigail Anketell-Jones, Lauren Dark, and Vanessa Kirby. This initially premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Telluride Film Festival. Netflix will debut Natasegara’s The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable doc streaming on Netflix starting on October 16th, 2026 this fall. Who wants to watch it?
