Watch: Monsters Inc.’s Mary Gibbs, Voice of Boo, Just Turned 30—And We Feel Old AF
You won’t boo-lieve how old the voice of Boo is now.
Nearly 25 years after Monsters, Inc. was released, Mary Gibbs—who voiced the toddler in the film alongside Billy Crystal’s Mike Wazowski and John Goodman’s Sully—celebrated her 30th birthday with a throwback photo that may spook you.
In an Oct. 11 post to her Instagram page, Gibbs shared a side-by-side comparison—originally posted by pop culture account @pubity—which featured a 2022 picture of herself attending a fan convention next to a pic of her standing alongside a Sully mascot from the Monsters, Inc. premiere in 2001.
“If you don’t feel old yet,” the post read, “the voice of Boo just turned 30.”
Over the years, Gibbs—who landed the role after her dad Rob Gibbs, a storyboard artist on the movie, brought her in to help with the animation—hasn’t been afraid to embrace Monsters, Inc. as an adult, even attending the Valleyscon & Cymru Horror Con in Wales last month to sign autographs for fans.
“Had such a great time,” she wrote on Instagram Sept. 3. “So grateful I get to travel the world and meet Monsters Inc fans all over the world!”
Earlier this year, Gibbs—who also voiced the role of young Riley in Pixar’s 2015 movie Inside Out—reflected on her experience working on Monsters, Inc., but noted she only has “little flashes” of memories due to her age at the time.

“I remember there was this magnetic fish game where the fish are opening their mouths,” she said on a May episode of the Daddiespodcast. “I have a vivid memory of playing that in the studio.”
However, Gibbs emphasized that all the voice actors avoided a 2319 and were “in our own recording studio at different timeslots” before Pixar pieced the movie together. So, she said, “The first time I actually met everyone was the premiere.”
“There’s a bunch of cameras and everyone’s there and I remember I got really scared and Billy Crystal recognized that,” she shared. “[He] pulled me to the side and talked to me and got on my level a little bit made me know it was OK. And then he picked me up and carried me down the red carpet.”
Though her memories from filming Monsters, Inc. may not fill up a scream canister, Gibbs has immense gratitude for the impact the movie has had on her life.
“Growing up being a part of that movie, it’s been really awesome,” she told Newsweek in 2021. “I’m not one to just introduce myself as Boo but when people do find out, especially after they know me for a little bit, it definitely blows people’s minds.”
And now, she added, “My favorite part is doing Comic Cons, and just meeting people in my day-to-day life.”
