Heated Rivalry’s Emily Hampshire Reveals Easter Egg You Missed

Watch: Paul Bettany Shares Rare Glimpse Into Life With Wife Jennifer Connelly

Never in life has Emily Hampshirenot been in a Jacob Tierney series.

In fact, nearly two months after Crave confirmed she will star in Heated Rivalryseason two as Fabian Salah’s best friend Vanessa, she revealed this isn’t her first appearance in the steamy hockey romance.

“I was actually even in season one as a voice that I wasn’t credited for,” Hampshire told E! News in an exclusive interview for her upcoming series VisionQuestpremiering Oct. 14, “but some fans picked up on that.”

As Ilya Rozanov (Connie Storrie) and Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) were backstage at the MLH Awards in episode two—hours before the infamous Las Vegas hotel room scene—Hampshire can be heard introducing them to announce the winner of the Lord Talon Award for Most Sportsmanlike Player.

While the Schitt’s Creek alum is looking forward to bringing sunshine to season two—in which she plays a character from Rachel Reid‘s third novel in the Game Changers series, Tough Guy—she admitted her addition to the cast wasn’t much of a surprise.

“Jacob Tierney, the showrunner and creator of Heated Rivalry, is my oldest and bestest friend,” she explained. “I basically would have found it strange if I wasn’t in it because I’ve done every one of his projects.”

They’ve always made the perfect team on and off the screen, with the Letterkenny creator even serving as an MVP at her 2006 wedding to Matthew Smith, whom she divorced in 2014.

“He got ordained online and performed my wedding ceremony,” Hampshire beamed, “which I walked down the aisle to ‘I’ll Believe in Anything,’ the song that’s in the show.”

With the actress now starring as E.D.I.T.H. in the upcoming Marvel miniseries opposite Paul Bettany‘s Vision, she’s ready for the spotlight in two major fandoms.

As for how Hampshire brought her AI persona, which stands for “Even Dead, I’m the Hero,” to life after she was once just a pair of glasses gifted to Spider-Man (Tom Holland) by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in 2019’s Far From Home?

“She has control over a terrifying amount of weapons,” she explained, noting that Stark still “gives her to a teenager. So I was like, ‘Who is she when she breaks out of the glasses?’ I think this is the E.D.I.T.H. we meet in VisionQuest because she’s just dying to have fun, but her idea of fun is blowing things up.”

The actress is one of the MCU AI personas Vision lives within his virtual mansion, Mindspace, along with Ultron (James Spader), Friday (Orla Brady) and Jarvis (James D’Arcy). After 2021’s WandaVision, the android—now working at a pub in Edinburgh and struggling to form an emotional attachment to his restored memories—finds support from his virtual roommates as he tries to better understand who he once was.

As Hampshire continued to explore her character’s explosive personality, she had show creator Terry Matalas—whom she previously worked with on Syfy’s 12 Monkeys—to thank.

“He told me when he was writing E.D.I.T.H., he kept getting my voice in his head,” she recalled. “My entry into this world was through Terry. So, it felt like going home. Whereas, if I didn’t have that entry point, it would have been very daunting.”

Don’t worry, though. Hampshire assured fans that her E.D.I.T.H. will definitely bring a much-needed spark to the Mindspace.

“I did want to make sure that the E.D.I.T.H. that I was playing is the same E.D.I.T.H. from Spider-Man,” she emphasized. “I wanted to have that link because she is very different in VisionQuest, but to me it’s really her being set free.”

As fans wait to see Hampshire in VisionQuest, which premieres weekly beginning Oct. 14, and Heated Rivalry, keep reading for more TV shows to add to the queue.
