Watch: Mason Thames Reveals “Favorite” Factor About Working With Girlfriend Mckenna Grace
Mckenna Grace isn’t ‘fraid of changes.
In fact, the Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping star revealed that much of her character Maysilee Donner’s costumes were heavily inspired by Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicksâ iconic wardrobe.
“Each of the Hunger Games have such a specific time period for fashion,” Grace exclusively told E! News at the Elegance is Authority: The Story, Style, and Power of Panem event in Paris Oct. 7. “Sunrise on the Reaping, at least [on] all the mood boards, there was Stevie Nicks. It was very ’60s, ’70s-inspired.”
While the prequel Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was influenced by the 1950s style, Grace said the fashion in original moviesâwhich starred Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutchersonâwere “more modern” to reflect contemporary times.
“It’s cool because you’re not only seeing younger versions of these characters,” the 20-year-old continued, “but what Panem and the Districts would have looked like at that time period.”
But there was one costume piece that Grace wasn’t too keen on wearing around set: the oversized capes Tributes donned while fighting for their lives during the 50th Hunger Games. As she said with a laugh, “My knees were purple because of those capes.”

It’s a sentiment shared by her costar Joseph Zada, who plays a younger version of Haymitch Abernathy (portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original movies).
“You can’t exactly run in those things,” he quipped to E!. “I think it was a sick joke to see everyone trip over themselves.”
Still, the 21-year-old did think they looked “really cool” compared to the literal rags he had to wear while filming scenes in the impoverished District 12.
“My first outfit that I have is a shirt that’s made out of handkerchiefs and other different materials,” Zada shared. “The pants that I wear in the morning are made out of the sacks of flour and wheat.”

The East of Eden actor also worked closely with costume designer Bina Daigeler to ensure that his later looks “leaned towards” what Harrelson donned in the original series.
“I really wanted the colors to be a lot more like darker greens and browns,” Zada said. “It’s a really rough time whenever he comes home drinking and everything that happens, so I wanted muted colors, some sadder stuff.”
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters Nov. 20.
