Tony Khan is defending ROH TV on social media

Ring of Honor’s weekly show on its HonorClub subscription streaming service doesn’t get a ton of coverage here, which is frankly because we have to prioritize things we see evidence wrestling fans are interested in, which doesn’t describe ROH on HonorClub.

We do keep tabs on the show, since its champions pop up on AEW television pretty regularly. But unless there’s a lot of buzz about a match from a taping, I’ll confess to mostly letting it play in the background while I work on other stuff. Like AEW’s, ROH PPVs have been great since Tony Khan bought the promotion/brand. But those are quarterly, and contain all the story refreshers you need to enjoy the production.

It was a critique of the weekly show that Khan saw on X (formerly Twitter) and decided he needed to respond to.

Noah Gilbert, or an X account using that handle, called the ROH’s weekly program a “disaster” and said he hopes the promotion will “run actual shows again”. He posted a Cagematch summary from an episode that got middling scores as supporting evidence:

TK noticed the episode was several months old, and questioned Gilbert’s use of “these days”. He also pointed to the quality of ROH’s most recent PPV:

“These days”? It’s October. This tv was in July. Since then, there was an excellent ROH Death Before Dishonor ppv in August. It was widely praised. There was free ROH TV on YouTube last night with tremendous action. You handpicked a tv from months ago and called it “these days.”

Gilbert returned, with a more reasonable approach and another Cagematch page showing a run of ROH on HonorClub leading into Death Before Dishonor which received similarly mid grades from users of that site.

The PPVs for ROH have never been an issue for me, theyve always been great.

I just think ROH has so much potential to be more than what it is now which for most wrestling fans is a show that is skippable on a weekly basis.

And if the goal for ROH is to develop talent, I dont see how wrestling shorter matches in front of a studio audience helps them long term compared to if ROH was running stand alone shows in front of crowds of like 1500 people and working longer matches

There were other accounts — typically very pro-AEW like Gilbert’s — saying similar things:

But there were more folks focused on Khan’s response, which did point out some serious flaws in Gilbert’s first post while not addressing its more substantive points.

I don’t blame Tony for clapping back at a snarky tweet, but I also don’t think ROH is gonna grow from beyond what it is until its regular programming is something more fans want to see.
