Andrew Painter Showcases Why He is a Key Part of Phillies Future

The Philadelphia Phillies were able to even up their series against the Atlanta Braves with a thrilling Game 2 win. In the win, the team got some big performances from key players.

With their season on the line, the Phillies were able to find a way on Wednesday afternoon. While it might have taken them 10 innings to get it done, it was a thrilling game.

Philadelphia was fortunate to have their ace Cristopher Sanchez on the mound, and he delivered. While he was charged with three runs in 6.2 innings pitched, one of the plays that resulted in some of the damage easily could have been an error on Bryce Harper, who botched a fly ball in right field.

Even though things looked bleak following the error, it was then Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper who were able to tie the game with back-to-back home runs. The game certainly got a little bit wild, but one of the key players for the team in the victory was rookie pitcher Andrew Painter. As an important part of the future, it was a very encouraging sign to see what he could do in a big spot.

With the bullpen woes of the Phillies being well documented, Painter coming out of the bullpen wasn’t too much of a surprise. The right-hander has had his fair share of ups and downs this year, but since returning from a trip back to the minors, he has looked really good.

In both August and September, Painter was able to have an ERA under 4.00, and his play was a major reason for the success of the starting rotation.

On Wednesday, making his playoff debut, the right-hander was able to get the win in three innings of work. Painter allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three batters and was a key reason the team won.

Since Jhoan Duran was unavailable, his ability to eat innings and pitch as well as he did was huge. Philadelphia has to be thrilled with what he was able to do after Sanchez pitched, and he has helped them flip the script in this series.

In terms of the long-term outlook, Painter showed why he has been considered to be one of the best young pitchers in the system and why he can be a key piece for years to come.
