Martine Singer is giving a peek into her family’s life today.

Nine months after her sister Michelle Singer Reiner and brother-in-law Rob Reinerwere murdered in their Los Angeles home, she shared how their kids Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28, are coping.

“Everybody in the family is healing in his or her own way,” Martine told Extra in an interview published Sept. 28. “I’ll never be my sister and I can never be what it is that’s missing in their lives, but I consider them my kids. There’s no daylight between us.”

Still, she emphasized that their lives are now “changed forever.”

“I suppose you healed from a wound, but the scar is there,” she continued. “It’s a really hard thing to describe because it doesn’t—it never goes away.”

Martine also reflected on how special the relationship was between Michele and Rob, who tied the knot in 1989.

“They were absolutely incredible together,” she added. “They met and [it] didn’t take long before they were kind of together forever.”

Plus, the late couple—also parents to Rob’s daughter Tracy Reiner with ex-wife Penny Marshall—spent their lives helping others, including at Martine’s organization Children Institute, which serves underserved communities.

“They were the most caring, generous, brilliant people,” Martine shared. “They did a lot to try to heal the world and it’s everybody’s responsibility to do their part.”

Since Rob and Michele’s December deaths, their son Nick Reiner, 32, has been indicted by a grand jury for their murders, with the grand jury alleging that he intentionally killed his parents by means of lying in wait with “a deadly or dangerous weapon”—in this case a knife.

Nick has pleaded not guilty on two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman.

Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty to Murdering Parents Rob Reiner and Michele ReinerDuring Nick’s Los Angeles arraignment Feb. 23, he entered a plea of not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He was represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, who replaced previous attorney Alan Jackson. With a preliminary hearing set for April 29, the L.A. County Public Defender’s media team released a statement saying they wouldn’t be commenting on the arraignment “or on Mr. Reiner’s overall case for the foreseeable future.”
