“We had no advertising. People discovered us.” Netflix has revealed the first look teaser trailer for another new comedy doc offering this fall titled SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of. That title says it all! SCTV is an influential Canadian sketch comedy show that was kind of the Canadian version of Saturday Night Live. Short for “Second City Television”, SCTV ran intermittently between 1976 and 1984 about a fictional television station. It was created as an offshoot of Toronto’s Second City troupe. It moved to American television, where it aired on NBC from 1981 to 1983. This new doc explores SCTV’s rise & legacy through cast interviews and a Toronto reunion, revealing how the Canadian sketch comedy series became influential and launched comedy icons while examining the lasting creative partnerships. Featuring comedy icons like Catherine O’Hara (RIP), Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, Joe Flaherty (RIP), and John Candy (RIP). Tom Hanks is a massive fan of the show, too. This doc connects right in with the other Toronto comedy doc this year – You Had to Be There about Toronto’s Godspell. The film about SCTV is a funny and heartfelt celebration of how a scrappy Canadian sketch show made comedy history. Laugh on.
