Update []: Last week, Nintendo made a Bokoblin boo-boo in its daily Nintendo Today Zelda quiz, accidentally listing two correct answers and locking some players out of a daily medal as a consequence. The company was quick to apologise for the error, saying that it was working on a fix. But when that fix response was posted… it produced yet another issue.
As flagged by Gaming Reinvented, the quiz apology was so long, that users on certain devices couldn’t select the ‘Okay’ message at the end, forcing them to close and re-open the app and locking them out of collecting their daily Zelda card that day. D’oh.
Nintendo has now published an apology for the apology (yes, really), and has promised to provide another response in due course.
Here is the latest apology, as found on Nintendo Today:
Regarding the notice titled “Apology and Update on Our Response to the The Legend of Zelda Collectible Cards Quiz Issue”, which was displayed when accessing the content starting 12:00 (UK time) on September 18th. An issue occurred on some devices where users were unable to press the “OK” button to close the notice. As a result, these users were unable to receive cards.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. This issue was resolved at 6:00 (UK time) on September 19th.
We will provide an update once our response to this issue has been finalised.
The full response to the initial quiz issue was to reward all players who answered the question with a medal, as well as updating those players’ Activity Logs and quiz results tab.
Who knows what the company will do to patch things up this time, but let’s just hope we don’t need an apology for the apology for the apology…
Original Story: It’s difficult to remember last week’s Zelda Direct without having your mind clouded by that sweet Ocarina of Time footage, but you might recall that Nintendo announced a couple of new Nintendo Today features before the main event.
Much like with the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the app is dishing out daily virtual trading cards to celebrate Zelda’s 40th anniversary, and there’s even a daily quiz for those who want to put their Hylian knowledge to the test. That is… when the answers are right.
You see, the Zelda question presented to users yesterday (16th September) featured an unusual little quirk where both of the potential answers were correct, but only one of them would be marked as such (thanks for the heads up, Gaming Reinvented).
The question asked what happens when Link approaches a group of Bokoblins while wearing the Bokoblin Mask, and the optional answers were either “They surround him” or “They treat him as one of their own”. Hmm.
If you’ve ever infiltrated a Bokoblin camp using this technique, you’ll know that both of those options are absolutely right — the monsters treat Link as one of their own while surrounding him. And yet only one of them was marked correct in the app, so if you got unlucky on your choice between the two completely valid answers, you’d end up with a nasty ‘incorrect’ mark.
And so, it’s time for the classic Nintendo apology, with the following message now appearing on the app when you first head to the card-collection screen:
There was an error in the Bokoblin Mask quiz from the Breath of the Wild pack. The answer “they surround him”, which should have been marked as correct, was presented as an incorrect option.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. An update will be posted once our response to this issue has been finalised.
Aside from the pain of being told you’re wrong when you’re actually correct (and missing out on one of the in-app medals, which can be exchanged for more cards or wallpapers), the issue isn’t all that deep. We imagine that Nintendo will either roll out the question again, or simply award everyone a medal as an apology. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Fortunately, the quiz continues as normal today, so you can get on the Nintendo Today app and flex your knowledge as usual.
