SmackDown kicked off tonight in Corpus Christi, Texas, with General Manager Nick Aldis introducing Sami Zayn for a promo.
As soon as the faux horns in the new Undisputed WWE Champion’s theme music died down, he was greeted with loud boos. He immediately went into the “Justice for Sami” shtick while holding a belt that still has CM Punk’s side plates.
Before long, Johnny Gargano and Candice LaRae made their way to the ring, and you can guess what Johnny Wrestling wants. (Yep, a shot at the title.)
To drive home the pointlessness of this altercation, Kevin Owens interrupted and Stunned Gargano. But the next face-off actually led somewhere with Aldis booking KO versus Zayn for the title tonight.
After announcing the main event, Nick pointed out Zayn’s last title reign lasted nine days and asked if he can make it past seven days this time.
Well, Sami managed to hold on to the belt for the time being.
The main event began with KO wasting no time in attacking Sami, which set the tempo for an aggressive fight.
Owens controlled the action early on. He also took the time to taunt any Zayn fans he could spot in the front row, who were outnumbered by those rooting for Kevin.
The momentum soon shifted to Zayn, and he brawled away while leaning more into heel tactics than his opponent.
When Owens got the upper hand again, he added a nice touch with a nod to his history with John Cena by landing an Attitude Adjustment.
Though it seemed like the match would be later be ruined by an interfering Gargano and LaRae (with the latter somehow hitting a Tornado DDT on KO), Zayn couldn’t manage to keep Owens’ shoulders down after a Helluva Kick.
Gargano’s meddling continued by putting Zayn’s foot on the ropes after Owens hit a Stunner. But Johnny wasn’t going to provide the decisive inference, because CM Punk appeared seemingly out of nowhere to nail Kevin with the title belt. Though Owens (maybe?) got his shoulder up when Zayn first attempted a pin, a Helluva Kick sealed the deal, and Zayn’s latest title run continues on, for now.
However, the in-ring action continued on and didn’t favor the champion as Punk executed a Go To Sleep on both Owens and Zayn before he triumphantly made his way to the back.

Before the first match of the night started, Randy Orton entered the arena just as Zayn’s in-ring promo segment ended. He gave a nice look at Zayn’s title in what could be a bit of foreshadowing.
What followed was the night’s first of two Money in the Bank qualifying matches. Considering this match featured Orton, United States Champion Trick Williams, and AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fénix, the expectations were pretty high.
The good news is the three men delivered a solid and fun match. Orton continued to defy Father Time, and Fénix is always exciting. If I have one complaint about the match it’s that it should have gone on longer before Trick stole the win from Randy by pinning an RKO’ed Rey. But I suppose short matches are a consequence of a crowded card and those oh-no-necessary backstage segments of Zayn crying and Charlotte/Tatum/Alexa doing whatever with candles.
WWE’s tag team division looks strong?
In a promotion where tag teams are too often an afterthought, WWE is actually investing somewhat in at least the two teams that competed tonight. After all, Bakasui got some pyro for their entrance while WWE Tag Team Champions MFT had a bonafide legend in their corner in the form of Haku.
Kyoki put on a fun display while rarely staying on his feet, and I’m always in favor of seeing more Shinsuke Nakamura on WWE television.
While Bakasui had control throughout most of the encounter, the match ended in a disqualification after Haku interfered. Tama and Talla Tonga then put the boots to the Japanese duo, but we’ll obviously see these four men go at each other again in the near future.
Qualifying for the women’s Money in the Bank is…
Jade Cargill, Alexa Bliss, and Jacy Jayne battled for a spot in the women’s MITB ladder match. The threeway had good moments, and I always enjoy watching Jayne work, but the timing was off at times.
Jade took some pretty hard bumps, and she robbed Bliss of a victory by pulling the ref away from counting a pin after Alexa nailed Jayne with a Sister Abigail. But in a somewhat surprising move, Jacy then returned the favor by stealing what was sure to be Jade’s pin of Bliss and getting the three-count on Alexa.
Jacy Jayne is going to the MITB ladder match in New Orleans!
While I’m happy about the result, having a stolen win as the finish for both of the night’s MITB qualifiers is just lazy.
Stray observations
•The Chelsea Green and Tiffany Stratton pairing has been going on much longer than I would have predicted, and I’m ready for it to end.
•I popped when Danhausen told Aldis that “some guy named Mickie” has been calling but he blocked him.
•We didn’t need to sit through Cody Rhodes recapping what’s been going on his career lately with Michael Cole.
•Good job by the commentary desk covering up for Jade Cargill saying “Lacy” instead of “Jacy.”
Overall?
Grade: B+
There was much to recommend on the show, but the lazy booking of the MITB qualifiers automatically deducts some points for me. The finish to the main event was also needlessly messy, but Punk’s appearance at least electrified the crowd and continued to move the story forward.
