“Tenzing – you know the mountain better than anyone. Can you pave the way for all of us?” Apple TV has unveiled their full official trailer for the movie Tenzing, an astonishing mountain climbing movie about the first summit of Mount Everest in 1953. It’s also one of my favorite films of 2026 so far. It plays in theaters for one week starting in October I highly recommend watching it this way on the big screen – a thoroughly immersive experience. On May 29th, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary & the Tibetan Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the top of the world’s tallest mountain. Tenzing is the untold and inspiring tale of one of the most important mountain climbers in history who became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Made by mountain filmmaker Jennifer Peedom (of docs Solo, Sherpa, Mountain, River) as her first narrative feature film after many docs actually filmed on the mountains in Nepal. Tenzing is a story of greatness that refuses to be diminished — and the love that makes it all possible. Starring Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay, Tom Hiddleston as Sir Edmund Hillary, Willem Dafoe as John Hunt the British expedition team leader, Caitríona Balfe as Jill Henderson, and Thinley Lhamo as Dawa Norgay, Tenzing’s first wife. I wrote a glowing review of this, stating: “it is awe-inspiring and will leave everyone who watches it instilled with the sense of determination & success that got Tenzing & Ed to the top 73 years ago.”

Based on true events, Tenzing chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston), became the first to summit Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe). Together, they persuade Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western climbers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust — and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling. Tenzing is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, director of the films Solo, Miracle on Everest, Sherpa, Mountain, River, and Deeper previously. This is premiering at the 2026 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals this fall. Apple TV debuts Peedom’s Tenzing film in select US theaters on October 9th, 2026 then streaming on Apple TV starting October 16th this fall. Highly recommend this.
