Fascinating Mountain Climbing Doc ‘The Last First: Winter K2’ Trailer

The Last First: Winter K2 Doc Trailer

“You can’t make a single mistake.” “It only got worse from that point.” Apple TV has revealed their official trailer for a documentary film titled The Last First: Winter K2, another new mountain climbing doc this year. This first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival at the start of 2026 and shown at other fests. An incredible, eye-opening, edge-of-your-seat documentary film story exploring extreme mountaineering’s changing culture during a treacherous winter K2 expedition following John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Sadparas (Ali Sadpara was their climbing leader), made by acclaimed filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev. Extreme ambition meets devastating consequence. In 2021, climbers tried to make the first winter ascent of K2 – one of the deadliest mountains in the world (tons of films have been made about it before). Tragically, K2’s first winter ascent claimed 5 lives – this film reveals modern alpinism’s struggles with commercialization, social media impact (ugh), and conflicts between marginalized climbers and traditional elites. This also features iconic Nepalese climber Nimsdai, who sadly passed away in an avalanche a few months ago. I wrote a good review of this doc from Sundance and do recommend it to anyone interested in modern mountain climbing.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Amir Bar-Lev’s doc The Last First: Winter K2, from YouTube:

Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, harrowing, moving story that takes an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing & its changing culture. Focusing on a 2021 expedition, this follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-son team of Ali & Sajid Sadpara, a party of mountaineers who set out to be the first to summit K2 in the winter, when the mountain’s conditions are the cruelest. The men soon find themselves sharing the treacherous ascent with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients, and a Nepalese team no longer content to help Westerners achieve climbing glory. The Last First: Winter K2 takes us to the icy heights and unpredictable weather of K2 and reveals a surprising and layered story—one of strategy & determination, class & caste, money & power—all under life-and-death circumstances. The Last First: Winter K2 is directed by acclaimed American doc filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev, of the doc films Fighter, My Kid Could Paint That, The Tillman Story, Re: Generation, 12-12-12, Happy Valley, and Long Strange Trip previously. Produced by Sean Richard, Sarah Tomson, John Battsek, Howard T. Owens, Ben Silverman. This first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Apple releases The Last First: Winter K2 in select US theaters + streaming on Apple TV on October 2nd, 2026.
