The New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez have agreed to a historic four-year, $135 million extension, per Jordan Schultz.
The $33.75 million average annual value is the most-ever for a cornerback, as is the $102 million in guaranteed money.
Gonzalez surpasses fellow 2023 first-round pick Devon Witherspoon’s $132 million ($101 million guaranteed) extension he agreed to on Aug. 15 with the Seattle Seahawks.
New England’s 24-year-old superstar cornerback is now under contract through the 2031-32 season, and becomes the highest-paid player in Patriots franchise history.
How Did We Get Here?
Gonzalez was a non-participant in the spring during voluntary OTAs before reporting to Foxboro for mandatory minicamp in June. However, he still practiced in a limited capacity.
Once training camp rolled around in late July, Gonzalez was a full participant. On Aug. 10, he suffered a minor ankle injury which held him out of practice until Aug. 25.
While the young cornerback’s contract situation was a key storyline in New England during the offseason, it took the national spotlight on July 25. Prior to the Patriots’ first training camp practice, team owner Robert Kraft told reporters there is a historic contract offer on the table for Gonzalez.
“We love Christian Gonzalez,” Kraft said. “We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we made an offer to him that makes him the highest paid player ever to play that position in the NFL. And coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history.
“So we’re glad we drafted him and he’s developed here. And we hope he’ll be with us for a long time.”
Since then, however, there had been few updates from either party. Gonzalez made clear his desire to keep contract talks away from the public eye.
“It’s just something we don’t want to handle in the media,” Gonzalez explained on July 28. “I want to keep that with the team and my team, and go on about that.”
But behind the scenes, both sides remained engaged throughout negotiations.
“Absolutely. And I think that’s the important thing,” head coach Mike Vrabel said when asked whether or not the team and Gonzalez are on the same page. “I’ve talked about his professionalism, everybody else’s. So, (his absences from practice) isn’t anything like that. It was something that happened in practice, and he’s where he’s supposed to be when he needs to be there.
Even so, with Gonzalez’s willingness to practice without a contract resolution and with the high-praise from the Patriots organization, it became clear both sides’ desires to come to an agreement.
“Each side is trying to do what’s right for them,” Patriots Director of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf told Devin and Jason McCourty in a halftime interview on the team’s TV broadcast on Aug. 22. “Christian is a tremendous player that we’ve been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn’t changed. We’re going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done.”
A few days later, Wolf mirrored a similar sentiment.
“Nothing new to report on Christian,” He said. “We want him here. He’s an elite player. I’ve been on record saying that before, and we’re continuing to work with his representation to find a resolution that works for everyone.”
Less than a week later, Gonzalez declined to comment on whether or not he would play in New England’s season opener on Wednesday without a contract resolution, nor would he say if he believed a deal would get done.
Now, between his current contract and his new extension, Gonzalez is now locked in with the Patriots for the next six seasons.
The Bigger Picture: Why Gonzalez’s Extension is So Important
Gonzalez’s historic contract represents change in New England. The last Patriots first-round pick to earn a second contract with the team was Dont’a Hightower, drafted in 2012. The team’s willingness to pay top-of-market for its homegrown talent should be an encouraging sign of things to come in the future.
Most notably, the Patriots will be on the clock next season for a contract extension with superstar quarterback Drake Maye. The 2025 MVP runner-up could get a market-resetting deal, topping Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, whose contract pays him north of $63 million annually.
“I’m not thinking about that right now,” Maye said on Aug. 5 when asked about a potential extension next year. “I don’t think it’s hard not to think about it. For me, I try to be in the present every day. That’s why they call it a present, man. It’s a gift. So, I just try to be here, be where my feet are, and trying to get better and better.”
Ultimately, Gonzalez’s historic new contract both retains a top-talent and proves the Patriots’ prioritization of keeping their in-house talent, even if it comes at a hefty cost.
