First Teaser for Alex Gibney’s 4-Hour ‘Musk’ Documentary About Elon

Musk Doc Teaser

“He’s a man who has lost his mind.” Bleecker Street has revealed the first official trailer for the powerful new documentary film titled simply Musk, about the uber-wealthy tech giant Elon Musk. The second new doc creation this year from the master doc filmmaker Alex Gibney, Musk is premiering at the 2026 Venice Film Festival now hence this new teaser trailer dropping just before the debut screening (his other one from this year is Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie at Sundance 2026). It’s finished and already ready for a theatrical release coming up later this month. Gibney’s latest is a full-on, 4-hour long journalistic doc that is split into two parts with an intermission. “An incisive look behind the legend of Elon Musk, the wealthiest, and most unchecked, man on the planet.” Yep. Gibney shows himself to be a master at exposing the dark truths behind the façade of public personas to demonstrate how power corrupts, and how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Maybe you already know all of what this doc explains, maybe not, as it spans his entire career across all of companies examining how much BS this guy is selling all the time. It’s up to you to watch & learn the truth about him! Gibney is going for the complete “unmasked” real story with this one.

Here’s the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk, direct from YouTube:

“In Musk, I chose to re-tell a familiar biographical tale but to forgo the master. Instead, I explored it from different angles that showed the master shot to be an illusion, and revealed a more disturbing truth. Musk reframes the story of the tech titan as the 21st century reincarnation of the confidence man. By subverting Musk’s favorite tropes of video gaming and simulations, the film conveys the dangers of becoming like the Game Master in Ready Player One. It’s a tale of power and its abuse, but shot from a low angle – the angle of Toto, from the wonderful Wizard of Oz. Instead of being mesmerized by the floating visage of the wizard, Toto saw the shuffling feet at the bottom of the curtain which, once tugged away, revealed levers and gears operated by an ordinary man desperate to project his power.”

Given his global economic and political reach, the tech titan Elon Musk is his latest and, perhaps, most controversial subject. Through meticulous research and reporting, director Alex Gibney reframes all we know about the tech titan trillionaire, revealing that the so-called “visionary genius” is little more than the 21st-century reincarnation of a confidence man. Musk himself has asserted that perceived reality may be nothing more than a simulation, and Gibney uses Musk’s own words to prove that even his most heralded accomplishments are rife with illusion and misdirection. Musk’s carefully crafted media image conceals a darkness fueled by misogyny, drugs, and a relentless drive to accrue power. The promise of such heavily government-funded projects as SpaceX and Tesla has been marred by some notable technological failures. Yet, these enterprises have made him the richest man in the world, often at the cost of genuine innovation. Gibney’s Musk is more than a deep dive into the mind of a power-hungry megalomaniac; it is a warning.

Musk is a 2-part documentary film directed by Oscar-winning prolific doc filmmaker Alex Gibney, director of many other docs including The Last Gladiators, Mea Maxima Culpa, We Steal Secrets, The Armstrong Lie, Finding Fela, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, Zero Days, No Stone Unturned, The Inventor, Citizen K, Crazy Not Insane, Totally Under Control, The Crime of the Century, Agents of Chaos, Boom! Boom!: The World vs. Boris Becker, In Restless Dreams, Wise Guy: David Chase & The Sopranos, Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie, & many others. Produced by Alex Gibney, Jessie Deeter, Erin Edeiken, Zhang Xin, Nick Shumaker, Jessica Grimshaw, Dana O’Keefe. This is premiering now at the 2026 Venice Film Festival playing in the Out of Competition section. Bleecker Street releases Gibney’s Musk doc in select US theaters starting September 18th, 2026 this fall.
