Playing in theaters worldwide is Coyote vs. Acme, the movie that Warner Bros was planning to delete & then never show anyone (still unbelievable?!), which was rescued by Ketchup Entertainment. After years in development, years of legal battles (how meta), and an extra year of final post-production & marketing prep, it’s finally here for all of us to enjoy on the big screen. Is it totally worth the wait? Was everyone making a big stink about it right? How did this movie turn out? Directed by comedy filmmaker Dave Green, Coyote vs. Acme is the tale of what happens when Looney Tunes character Coyote decides to sue the Acme Corporation for selling him defunct & dangerous products to try to capture the Roadrunner. He hires small town billboard lawyer Kevin Avery, played by Will Forte, to confront the corporation and get them make better products. Just like Space Jam and Who Framed Roger Rabbit before it, Coyote vs. Acme is a clever live-action + cartoon hybrid movie combining cartoon antics interacting with real human beings. Made by Warner Bros Animation, the studio tried to shelve it indefinitely – until it was successfully rescued & revived. And now we get to experience it all of its glory. Your thoughts on the movie?

To get this party started, Coyote vs. Acme is a total blast! It’s wacky and fun and surprisingly heartfelt and emotional and wholesome. It’s also zany and bonkers and wacky, but not too zany and bonkers and wacky, just the right amount, I might say. Okay sure maybe it’s not the masterpiece we were all hoping it might be. It’s good but not entirely amazing. The narrative runs out of steam in the second half and the court room stuff starts to fizzle out. There’s only so many fun jokes, but they’re hilarious when they land. The revelation with Coyote actually being the sneaky one is interesting, though expected considering that is his character, but it also takes away from the momentum. And, as much as I was slightly disappointed by the twist, I do appreciate they didn’t win the case and it wasn’t a cliche, slam dunk, easy peasy finale. There’s something more brutally honest & more vitally important in that ending. And, ultimately, the movie’s existence should be celebrated for the same reason Coyote even trying to take on Acme should be celebrated – it’s powerful to stand up to the “big guy” corporation and say not anymore, we will challenge you, we will not step aside. I had a good time watching this and still recommend it – especially to see John Cena & Will Forte duke it out.
