“You reinvented what was possible to do.” “How powerful is this music?” HBO Max has revealed their full official trailer for a new documentary series streaming this fall titled JAŸ-Z in 8, although the actual title features the infinity symbol: JAŸ-Z in ∞. The 8-part doc series features artist JAŸ-Z in conversation with music guru Rick Rubin, and it’s also directed by Rick Rubin (you can learn more about him in this doc). In Rick Rubin’s directorial documentary debut, the series unfolds over many hours of candid conversation between two creative superstars. The career-spanning series closely studies the ingenuity of JAŸ-Z’s lyrics as he breaks down his writing process and traces how his words reflect his childhood, the experiences that shaped him, and the evolving world he navigated as his career grew. As JAŸ-Z guides us through the words and music that informed the work, he shows the deep inextricable connection between art and life. This doc series is executive produced by Daniel Kaluuya, and features cinematography by acclaimed DP Bradford Young (of Selma, Arrival, Solo: A Star Wars Story, BLKNWS). This actually does look quite fascinating to watch, covering all of Jay-Z’s career and many of his most famous songs. Better than yet another biopic doc.
Here’s the two official trailers (+ final poster) for HBO Max’s doc series JAŸ-Z in ∞, from YouTube:

“Can’t knock the hustle.” 🎤 30 years after his landmark debut album “Reasonable Doubt,” the artist, icon, philanthropist, entrepreneur JAŸ-Z sits down with longtime friend, producer, and director Rick Rubin for an intimate reflection on his storied career, revisiting the music together and unpacking his work and life through a shared listening and illuminating conversation. Featuring discussions on many of JAŸ-Z’s iconic tracks and album cuts, including “99 Problems,” “Brooklyn’s Finest,” and “4:44,” the 8-episode doc series offers a deeply revealing portrait of the artist and his work, exploring the influences and inspiration that shaped both the man and his music. JAŸ-Z in ∞ is a doc series created & directed by the guru himself Rick Rubin, who also directed the Run DMC feature film Tougher Than Leather back in 1998, and is now directing his first documentary to watch. Produced by Leila Mattimore & David Rohde. Executive produced by Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, Sara Rodriguez, Shawn Carter, Daniel Kaluuya. HBO debuts Rubin’s JAŸ-Z in 8 doc series streaming on HBO Max starting on September 18th, 2026 this fall. Who wants to watch?
