Country music icon Dolly Parton died today, Aug. 25. She was 80.
Parton’s nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in a video posted to Parton’s social media.
“By her example, we believed that anything was possible,” he said in the video. “She never saw a door she couldn’t open and the doors she opened made and changed history. My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you.”
Throughout her seven-decade career, Parton recorded 49 studio albums, composed over 3,000 songs, won 11 Grammys and one Academy Award.

‘9 to 5’ (1980)
Parton made her feature film debut in “9 to 5” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The movie, based on an idea by Fonda, follows three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with and overthrowing their company’s autocratic, “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” vice president.
The theme song from “9 to 5” became one of Parton’s biggest hits and won two Grammy awards. The movie was adapted into a musical in 2009; Parton composed the musical score and was nominated for a Tony Award.

‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ (1982)
Parton’s next film role came in 1982, when she starred in a film adaptation of the musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” opposite Burt Reynolds. Based on a true story, Parton plays Miss Mona Stangely, the owner of a Texas brothel that is caught in a media firestorm after it’s exposed in a newspaper and outside interests want the brothel shut down.

‘Steel Magnolias’ (1989)
Based on the play of the same name, “Steel Magnolias” follows a group of women in a small-town Southern community, their tight-knit relationships and how they cope with the death of one of their own. Parton stars alongside Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts in the tearjerker.

‘Straight Talk’ (1992)
In addition to starring in the rom-com “Straight Talk” opposite James Woods, Parton wrote 10 original songs for the movie’s soundtrack and re-recorded her 1976 track “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” The movie follows a woman who leaves her small-town life to move to Chicago, where she accidentally becomes a successful radio talk show host.

‘Hannah Montana’ (2006-2010)
In 2006, Parton appeared in her first of three episodes of Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana” as Aunt Dolly, opposite her real-life goddaughter Miley Cyrus. After Season 1, Episode 16, she reprised the role twice more, in Season 2, Episode 20 and Season 4, Episode 11.

‘Joyful Noise’ (2012)
Two strong-minded women are forced to cooperate when budget cuts threaten to shut down a small-town choir in “Joyful Noise.” Parton plays G. G. Sparrow, the widow of the choir director, who believes she should have inherited her husband’s job.

‘Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors’ (2015)
Parton does not appear on-screen in”Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors,” but narrates the made-for-TV movie that details her early life growing up in Tennessee as one of many siblings. Dolly aspires to be something great but must cope with family troubles, including the premature birth and death of her baby brother.

‘Christmas on the Square’ (2020)
An angel bears striking resemblance to Parton (because she plays the angel, of course) in “Christmas on the Square,” which was released in time for Christmas 2020. The film follows Regina Fuller (Baranski), who returns to her hometown to evict the residents and sell the land to a mall developer. The angel is tasked with changing her mind and the lives of everyone in town.
