Rumer Willis is experiencing a different kind of grief.

Because while her dad Bruce Willis is still with her, his battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) has irrevocably changed who he is.

“I really miss my dad,” she said in a video shared by health company Function. “I miss a different version of who he was. There are some days that are just so hard.”

But while it’s easy to dwell on how her father used to be, the 38-year-old—the eldest of Bruce’s three daughters with ex-wife Demi Moore—tries to focus on the here and now.

As she put it, “I try to prioritize being present with where he’s at now.”

And part of that mindfulness has been focusing on the positives, such as the fact her father has been able to meet her 3-year-old daughter Louetta, whom Rumer shares with her ex Derek Richard Thomas. Plus he recently joined his family as daughter Tallulah Willis, 32, tied the knot with Justin Acee.

“I’m so grateful that I have a child that got to meet him because I don’t know if my sisters will have that,” Rumer explained on The Inside Edit in May, adding of the changes she’s noticed in her dad, “There’s this sweetness. He’s always been this macho dude and now there’s this—fragile is not the right word—but like a tenderness that maybe being Bruce Willis might not have allowed him in a way.”

In the three years since the Die Hard star received his diagnosis, his family—including his and Demi’s middle daughter Scout Willis, 35, as well as his wife Emma Heming Willis and their girls 14-year-old daughter Mabel and 12-year-old Evelyn—have been candid about the ups and downs of his health battle.

In fact, Emma has expressed a similar sense of grief when it comes to her husband of over 15 years and the “ambiguous loss” she lives with day to day.

“It’s grieving someone who is alive,” Emma explained on the June 15 episode of Bossticks. “And that is what many people who are caregivers to someone with dementia experience, because your person is there physically but maybe not mentally or emotionally.”

The 50-year-old also detailed how the many forms of dementia all “take and they take and they take, sometimes very slowly,” which has caused her and the rest of Bruce’s family to feel as though they’re grappling with different kinds of losses all the time.

“You are consistently in grief. I’ve just learned how to navigate it,” she said. “Maybe I’m a little bit more used to it at this point than I was early on. But yeah, you are just sitting with it and moving alongside of it.”

So we make sure to strike a good balance as best as we know how.”And while she’s been pretty frank with both Mabel and Evelyn about their dad’s condition, Emma is also focused on creating lots of happy memories, sharing videos from their recent girls’ trip to Paris and putting up Christmas decorations back home.
