Christian Lundgaard carved his way through the field at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, driving from ninth on the grid to secure a second-place finish on the scenic 1.7-mile, 7-turn temporary street circuit wrapped around the National Mall.
Behind the wheel of the #7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, the 25-year-old Dane delivered another standout drive in what has been a breakout 2026 NTT IndyCar Series campaign. The runner-up effort marks Lundgaard’s sixth podium of the year, adding to an impressive stat line that already features two wins, 11 top-10 finishes, and one pole position.
The result carries significant championship weight. With the podium finish, Lundgaard moved into third place in the overall standings with 443 points. He now sits just 19 points behind race winner Kyle Kirkwood (462 points) in second place, with only three races left on the schedule. Reflecting on his attempt to catch Kirkwood in the closing stages, Lundgaard kept it straightforward.
“Yeah, I feel like I had just a couple of laps where I was faster than him, and then I know the 12 laps where he was faster than me, so…”
Beyond the performance, driving against the backdrop of the nation’s capital left a lasting impression on the young driver.
“Yeah, what an experience all weekend. The best background I’ve ever had on a racetrack obviously. Just being a part of it, seeing where the series is going, being a part of it,” Lundgaard said. “Obviously the race was long. I think we got a better result than we expected. We got three more races to go. I think I’m just happy to see Alex (Palou) not win for once.”
With championship leader Palou and contender David Malukas suffering tough outings on the Washington street course, the title race has swung wide open heading into the final stretch.
“Obviously Kyle and I were second and fourth in the championship going into this weekend. Alex and David had some unfortunate luck out there. But those are the days that we need to not have for the rest of the season,” Lundgaard said.
“I’m definitely pushing for that second. Kyle made that a little tougher for me today.”
