“The message is–eat me!” 🐟 “We are screwed.” Enjoy the official trailer for an indie comedy film titled The Fisherman, made by filmmaker Zoey Martinson. This is getting a very limited theatrical release in the US coming up this fall, after originally premiering back in 2024 at the Venice Film Festival. The film is made in Ghana about a retired fisherman who ends up on a journey to Accra with a funny fish that speaks. It sounds kooky and definitely looks as fun as it sounds. This also toured to the Miami Film Festival and a few other US fests last year. Retirement can’t stop Atta Oko from chasing one last dream. When the aging Ghanaian fisherman sets out to earn enough for a boat of his own, a sarcastic talking fish and three eccentric young associates join him. Zoey Martinson’s magical-realist comedy turns wounded pride, generational clashes, and unlikely friendships into a warm search for purpose and independence. Starring Ricky Adelayitar as Atta, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, Kiki Romi, Dulo Harris, Fred Amugi & many others. This looks like a clever, amusing indie creation from Ghana that’s worth your time to discover. Have a look.

In this award winning hilarious comedy, the aging fisherman Atta Oko (starring Ricky Adelayitor) sets his sights on finally having his own boat and becoming the envy of his fishing village, he’ll just need some help from a sarcastic talking fish. Filled with laughter, magic, and the vibrant culture of the West African country Ghana, The Fisherman is a delightful tale of family, dreams – and the enduring spirit of a true fisherman. 🇬🇭 The Fisherman is written and directed by Ghanaian-American filmmaker Zoey Martinson, making her feature directorial debut after numerous other short films previously. Produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie and Korey Jackson. This initially premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival a few years ago, and it also played at 2025 American Black Film Festival last year. Martinson’s The Fisherman film opens in select US theaters starting (first at The Quad in NYC) on September 18th, 2026 coming soon. Look any good?
