Watch: ‘Superman’s David Corenswet Details Workout, Diet Transformation to Become Man of Steel

Green Lantern Corps’ light is shining bright in the DC Universe.
After all, HBO Max’s new series Lanterns is bringing the intergalactic police force to the small screen as veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) trains new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) while investigating an extraterrestrial incident in rural Nebraska.
The show—which premiered Aug. 16, with weekly releases until Oct. 4—is the latest addition to DC Comics’ reset, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which also includes movies Superman, Supergirl and Clayface. As each project adds a new layer to the DCU, co-CEO James Gunn revealed that the latest series is casting a green spotlight on the franchise’s future.
“Those things are worked in,” he toldRolling Stone last October, also pointing to Supergirl. “We knew both of those stories were a part of what we originally put together, so they’re part of the overall tapestry, but they’re also their own thing.”
“There’s just a longer, sort of a bigger world we’re building with all these different pieces,” the director continued. “They do all come together and intersect sometimes in a story fashion and sometimes just in a ‘Here’s another piece of the world’ fashion. Lanterns is really important in setting up things.”
Worlds collide in the new series with Rushville Sheriff Kerry Kane (KellyMacdonald)—whom Hal and John must make nice with as they unravel the mystery—having traded the grit of Batman’s Gotham City for the quiet cornfields of the Midwest.
Although Lanterns predominantly takes place in 2016 during the crash in Nebraska, the series also shares glimpses from 1986—during which Hal is tapped as Green Lantern over John’s dad John Stewart Sr. (Sherman Augustus)—1996, when Hal reveals his identity to the world and 2026, when John finds his dead body frozen in Rushville without his ring.

The crossovers continue with Hal sharing his story during a 60 Minutes interview, which John is seen watching as a child. Around the same time, Superman (David Corenswet) crash-landed on Earth, as confirmed in the 2025 movie’s opening sequence.
By 2016, Hal had been training John at the behest of the Guardians of the Universe for nearly two months, with little to show for it, while they investigated the alien interaction. During that time, one Metropolis visitor flies in.
Indeed, Nathan Fillion reprises his role as Guy Gardner, the brash Justice Gang member, following his appearances in Superman and Peacemaker season two. His cameo begins to put the pieces of the story together, since Guy was previously seen wearing Hal’s ring while helping Superman stop Boravia from invading Jarhanpur.

“At the end of this episode, Hal is dead,” Lanterns co-creator Tom King explained during the Aug. 16 episode of Lanterns: The Official Podcast. “But also, you see John’s hand. He’s not wearing that ring. Guy has the ring.”
And he asked the questions fans are also wondering: “Why does Guy end up with the ring? Where do we go after this? ‘Cause this moves us forward.”
Although John is considered Hal’s backup in Lanterns, some of the comics take a different approach. He is actually Guy’s backup in the comics, which leads him to the ring since Guy was hit by a bus and was unable to perform his duties.

And it seems Guy is here to stay, with the character having the most appearances across all projects so far, which Fillion is here for.
“I like the idea that he is the connective tissue,” TheRookie star told Screen Rant in August. “He’s the thread that weaves throughout the fabric of this universe.”
While fans wait to see what happens next in Lanterns, keep reading for more shows to keep an eye out for.
