Moderate Rep. Haley Stevens and progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed are locked in a high-stakes battle in Michigan to face Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in November’s general election in an open seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
The race was too close to call as of 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday. El-Sayed was leading at that hour with 48.6% of the vote, compared to Stevens’ 47.3%. Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out of the race last month, had 4% of the vote.
The general election race could decide which party controls the Senate in the next Congress.
In the governor’s race, ABC News projects Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican Rep. John James will win their respective primaries and will face off in November.

James would be the state’s first elected Black Republican governor in history.
In Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, ABC News projects progressive activist and Democratic Socialists of America member William Lawrence will defeat two more moderate candidates to be the Democratic nominee to take on first-term Republican incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett. The Cook Political Report rates the district as a “Toss Up.”

Michigan is one of five states that held primaries on Tuesday. Here’s a look at the others:

Missouri
In Missouri’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, ABC News projects incumbent Rep. Wesley Bell will beat former Rep. Cori Bush, who Bell unseated two years ago.
Bell was boosted by outside spending from pro-Israel groups. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with pro-Israel group American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spent millions opposing Bush in both the 2024 and 2026 primaries.
Bush aimed to capitalize on voter sentiment souring on Israel over its actions during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, as well as a wave of success by progressives mounting anti-incumbents campaigns.
In Missouri’s newly redistricted 5th District, Republican state Sen. Rick Brattin will face incumbent Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver in November, ABC News projects.
Cleaver, who has represented the district since 2005, was unopposed in the Democratic primary but faces an uphill battle in the general election after the state legislature redrew the district last year to lean Republican. National Republicans view the district as a top target for flipping.

Virginia
Army veteran Bert Mizusawa will win the Republican primary for Senate in Virginia, ABC News projects, and will face Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, who is running for his fourth term.
Mizusawa defeated business leader Kim Farnington and Marine Corps Reserve Lt. Col. David Williams. Warner did not face a primary challenger.
In House races, three Republicans were running to face first-term Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman in the 7th District while longtime Rep. Don Beyer faced several challengers in the Democratic primary in the 8th District.

Kansas
In the Kansas governor’s race, ABC News projects Republican state Senate President Ty Masterson will face Democratic state Sen. Cindy Holscher in the general election in November to replace Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, who is term-limited.
Masterson beat six other candidates in the Republican primary. He received backing from President Donald Trump, who called in a tele-rally for the candidate less than a week ahead of the primary.
Holscher defeated state Sen. Ethan Corson and Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog. She campaigned on her background growing up on a farm and touted her experience flipping a seat in 2016 held by a Republican incumbent in a conservative district.
ABC News projects Rev. Adam Hamilton will win Kansas’ Democratic Senate primary — setting him up to face off in November against incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall, who ABC News projects will win the Republican primary.
Hamilton entered the race largely considered the frontrunner, despite only launching his campaign in April. He initially announced he would explore running as an independent, a move that drew criticism from the state GOP.
No Democrat has won a Senate seat in Kansas since 1932.
