Met Gala 2027: John Galliano to Be Honored With Costume Exhibit Theme

Watch: Anna Wintour Reacts to Rumors She Approves All Met Gala Looks

Met Gala 2027 will honor a fashion icon.

Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced “John Galliano: Horizons” as its spring 2027 exhibit, which will be the inspiration for the theme of the forthcoming gala.

While the evening’s celebrity cochairs and official dress code have not been shared, the event is already making history, as this will be only the third time the Met Gala has ever honored a living designer with an exhibition, joining Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo in 2017

“There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano,” Wintour shared in a July 31 statement to Vogue. “His body of work—at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label and more—combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light, the past, the present, the future all smashing together in a brilliant way.”

“He’s a great designer and his career isn’t defined by a moment—something that he will live with for the rest of his life,” she continued. “The exhibition won’t shy away from any of the darkness in John’s past. It’s part of what has shaped him. The show will take in the full arc of his career and grapple with all of it.”

Curator Andrew Bolton agreed, sharing in his own statement that “every Galliano collection begins as a journey among things separated by time, place, or medium: portrait and posture, silhouette and story, memory and material.”

“‘Horizons’ approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations,” he continued. “It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material, and material becomes emotion.”

And seeing how “a horizon reveals not only what lies before us, but also where we stand,” Bolton said the exhibit will focus on “how Galliano has remapped the world through fashion and how his conduct, its consequences, and changing cultural values have reshaped our understanding of his work.”

Over the years, many of the 65-year-old’s designs have graced the Met Gala red carpet. Most notably,Kim Kardashian wore a gray cardigan over a custom silver gown made by Galliano for Maison Margiela at the 2024 Met Gala, which centered around the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit at the time with a dress code of “Garden of Time.”

“This is like the wildest night in a garden,” Kardashian explained of the look in a Vogue interview at the time. “And I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work, my hair’s all messed up.”

Though Galliano is only the third living designer to be recognized at the charity ball, other creatives including Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander McQueen have been honored following their deaths.
