President Donald Trump announced “major combat operations” against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.

The U.S. and Iran have nonetheless continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz the primary flashpoint.

Iran has ‘no negotiations’ ongoing with US, Baghaei says

Amid the brief pause in the war between the U.S. and Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told journalists at his weekly press conference on Monday that Iran has “no negotiations with America.”

“The negotiations that we have, and which may genuinely be subject to different interpretations, are the negotiations we have with Oman. They are focused on creating the necessary arrangements regarding the Strait of Hormuz,” Baghaei added.

Baghaei also said that Tehran “will not allow the U.S. to determine the time of war and peace, and we will defend ourselves for as long as necessary,” according to a readout published by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

‘Progress was made’ in talks with Oman over Strait of Hormuz traffic, Iran says

Talks between Oman and Iran were “fruitful and some progress was made” during the Omani diplomatic delegation’s visit to Tehran on Friday and Saturday, according to Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqhaei.

“The two sides exchanged views on common principles and operational mechanisms for managing safe shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal states,” Baghaei said Sunday.

“The Omani delegation left Tehran on Saturday evening, but technical and political consultations between the two sides are continuing,” he added.
