Carnival Cruise Line is putting its foot down when it comes to cutlery.
Three days after a viral video of a cruise passenger using one of the ship’s metal forks to scratch visible chunks of skin off the bottom of her foot circulated on TikTok, the vacation company dug its heels into a message to customers.
“We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care,” Carnival shared in a July 22 statement to Instagram. “Once we became aware of the situation, our team quickly addressed it with the guest and removed the utensil from service.”
Though the cruise line recognized the gravity of the situation, the company was also light on its feet in its response.
“While the video may be generating laughs and gasps online, cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us,” the statement continued. “Our crew works hard every day to maintain high standards across our feet fleet and to ensure all guests enjoy a safe, clean, and comfortable vacation.”
Meanwhile, the Carnival passenger who recorded the shocking footage didn’t just have a sole video. In a separate clip, she documented the passenger scratching thick, flaky skin off the bottom of her foot with her bare hand before she immediately picked up a piece of pizza and took a bite.
“I mean having a foot fungus is one thing,” one viewer commented, “but to scratch your foot and then go straight into your food without sanitizing your hands!”

Since the beginning of the foot-scratching saga—which featured the TikToker speaking to the ship’s guest services and eventually the boat’s captain, as well as her receiving disposable wooden utensils for the rest of her trip—the videos have run up more than 40 million views on the platform.
And beyond the viral views, some users kicked back and let the 2008 movie Taken inspire their response.
“Please. tell me you contacted the authorities,” one viewer wrote. “Lol I’m talking FBI, CIA, Liam Neeson.”
