“He’s after you now, isn’t he?” Studiocanal has revealed the official trailer for the 4K re-release of the serial killer thriller classic Manhunter, celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year after first opening in 1986 (a box office bomb at the time). This new version is called Manhunter: The Final Cut, an updated edit from director Michael Mann. He explains his vision for “The Final Cut”: “Not only restore it to its former glory but to utilize new technology to create an experience as visceral for audiences in 2026 as the original was in 1986. ‘If the picture was left the way it was, it would be interesting, but you’d feel some distance… You’d be observing it somewhat. I’m more interested in its original intent impacting you the same way it may have in 1986… that is, to bring you into it again in the original way.'” In the movie, based on the “Red Dragon” book, former FBI profiler Will Graham returns to service to pursue a deranged serial killer dubbed “the Tooth Fairy” by the media. The “pulsating, cutting-edge” thriller returns to theaters in a breathtaking 4K restoration supervised by Mann. Starring William Petersen, Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Brian Cox, Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang, and Tom Noonan as Dollarhyde. Of course this looks better than ever now – a must watch for fans of serial killer films. I’m curious to see what makes it “The Final Cut” this time.

“It’s just you and me now, sport…” A retired criminal profiler (William Petersen) reluctantly returns to the FBI to help track down a serial killer of families and is forced to consult an expert – the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox in a subtly chilling performance). The third feature written and directed by Michael Mann is a gripping adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris’ famed crime novels “Red Dragon” and benefits from the filmmaker’s typically striking visuals, plus a top notch supporting cast including Tom Noonan as Francis Dolarhyde – the hunted killer known as the Red Dragon or the “Tooth Fairy” – along with 3-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen as his blind love interest. Manhunter: The Final Cut is written and directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Michael Mann, his fourth film at the time after The Keep (1983) and before making L.A. Takedown (1989) and The Last of the Mohicans (1992) after. Adapted from the novel “Red Dragon” by Thomas Harris. Produced by Richard Roth. Made by Red Dragon Productions & De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. The film originally opened in theaters in August 1986. Studiocanal & Rialto Pictures are re-releasing Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut in US theaters again starting July 24th, 2026 this summer along with playing in UK cinemas starting September. Anyone a big fan of this movie?
