Watch: Christopher Nolan Shares Insight Into His Kids Working on The Odyssey
The Odyssey was an epic family affair for Christopher Nolan.
After all, the director’s kids—Flora, Oliver, Rory and Magnus—with his wife and longtime producing partner Emma Thomas were all “scattered” about the set as part of the crew.
“All four of them were able to work in the film,” Nolan told E! News in an exclusive interview. “They had a lot of fun, and it was great to have them along.”
Though Nolan’s children previously made cameos in his films like Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer, the Oscar winner emphasized that they “weren’t doing the glamorous jobs” this time around.
“I’d sort of look behind a boat at sea,” Nolan recalled with a chuckle, “see a guy in a wetsuit maneuvering the boat and realize it was one of my sons.”
And it was especially poignant for the 55-year-old to have his kids on set. As Nolan put it, “The Odyssey is a family story. And so—when you’re engaging with it creatively, emotionally—you do think a lot about your own life and your own relationships.”
That’s why Nolan considers himself to have “the greatest job in the world.”
“I’m very, very lucky to do what I do,” he shared. “I get to work with wonderful, creative people and get to put a group of people together on a project with a shared sense of creative purpose.”
Nolan continued, “The movie business, it’s just a wonderful privilege to be able to work in.”

Especially since he’s been able share a set with Thomas—who he married in 1997—for all 13 of his directorial works throughout the last three decades, including The Prestige, Dunkirk, Tenet and the entire Dark Knight trilogy. (His brother Jonathan Nolan also collaborated on several of the films.)
“We do everything together,” Nolan raved, crediting Thomas, 54, for his successful filmmaking career. “She’s the voice of reason, but she’s also completely honest and open about how she feels about the way I’m approaching things from a creative point of view.”
He added, “It’s essential. You have to have that.”
