
Destiny 2 developer and PlayStation first-party studio Bungie has today confirmed news that it is to undergo yet another round of layoffs as it reorganises the team, having finished working on content for the looter shooter.
In a social media statement, the developer shared there’ll be a “reduction in force” because it cannot continue operating at its current size in relation to what it’s working on — the final Destiny 2 content update is out and its other projects are “still in early incubation”.
The message thanks all those impacted for all their work, and confirms it will have more to share in the future regarding new titles, but “today is not that day”. Apparently, the layoffs “best position the studio now and for the future”.
Interestingly, the statement also acknowledges the general sentiment surrounding Destiny over the past few years: “As the leaders of Bungie, past and present, we recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years.”
In an online statement from PlayStation itself, Hermen Hulst said the layoffs affect “most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations.”
Hulst continued: “This decision was made only after extensive discussion and careful consideration, and I want to provide some context on how we arrived here. Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy. We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.”
