Though Sareee was cleared by doctors in Japan, the AEW medical team wasn’t as sure. That meant Maya World was a last minute replacement for the Women’s Owen Hart Tournament match that Sareee was scheduled to take part in against Skye Blue on June 10’s Dynamite Summer Blockbuster.
It was a big opportunity for World (real name Dashundra Wilson), who was signed along with her tag partner Hyan last year after they filled another opening on short notice. So even though Jatwane, the 25-year-old brother who taught her to love pro wrestling was just killed in a tragic roadside incident in Texas after his car broke down three days ago, Maya was ready to take on Blue in Cincinnati tonight.
A GoFundMe is set up for Jatwane Wilson, but World shared they’re already nearly hit their goal. You can still donate here.
With the wrestling community’s support behind her, World and Blue battled through a commercial. After trading nearfalls, a frustrated Sister of Sin went for her finisher. Maya was ready, and jackknifed over to take the win.
So from tragedy, Maya World gets some exposure while honoring her brother. She’ll continue her Ring of Honor story with that brand’s long-reigning Women’s champ Athena* in the semi-finals at a TBA date.
Join us in lifting up World for a cinderella run, and get a full rundown on Dynamite Summer Blockbuster right here.
* I haven’t been keeping up with it either, but Manolo assures me AEW can make a great video package for their program.
