Mom surprises her son, finishes their story at WrestleMania 42 movie screening

A touching moment between a mother and son unfolded just before WrestleMania Saturday went live at a movie theater.

At the AMC 18 in Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, Sandra Melissa Gonzalez surprised her 16-year-old son Ian Lopez with a WrestleMania Vegas replica title just before the lights dimmed and the show began. 

For her, it was a way to help him finish his story that began at last year’s WrestleMania.

“Last year, I took my son to WrestleMania, and he wanted to purchase that belt, but unfortunately, they didn’t have it. It sold out quickly,” said Gonzalez.

Citing WWE’s high ticket prices, she said they wouldn’t be attending this year’s event, also in Vegas. Still, knowing how much Ian wanted the replica belt, she purchased it early for him.

Before the show started, AMC staff entered with a large gift box bearing Ian’s name. When he opened the box, balloons floated out, revealing the title inside. Fans cheered and snapped photos, congratulating the new champ.

After last year’s disappointment, he asked his mother to tell him when the title went on sale so he could buy it. Instead, she quietly purchased it and waited until Saturday to give it to him.

“She surprised me today. I was happy as hell,” said Ian.

For Gonzalez, a lifelong fan who introduced her son to wrestling three years ago, the gesture was about more than memorabilia. It was about the shared experience.

“It’s a lot of money invested, but it’s worth it,” she said. “It’s memories.”
