We were promised one more confrontation between World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and Roman Reigns on the WrestleMania 42 go home episode of Monday Night Raw in Sacramento. That confrontation took one hell of a strange turn when Punk hit the scene and instead of piss and vinegar we got … vulnerability?!?
He came out and told the truth straight to Roman’s face — he hates him only because he envies him so very, very much. He envies that he has headlined WrestleMania so many times, that he has all the talent and respect that he does, that he was born into a dynasty, and he’s even sorry that he invoked his father’s name in vain.
What the hell?!?
The live crowd didn’t know how to take it. Finally, Punk got around to saying he may end up bloody but he’s going to win the match, the thing that actually matters here.
Reigns’ response?
“I hate you too. I’ve hated you for a long time. But the main reason is because of your relationship with all of them. You see, I hope one day I can get to the point that when I leave, they miss me as much as they missed you.”
The truest thing Punk has is the connection with the fan base and no one can take that away. But that’s his truth, and not the reality. The reality, Reigns said, is his time is up and The Tribal Chief will be taking over again come Sunday night in Sin City.
So there you have it.
They envy each other, and want what the other has, and they’ll fight over that. The winner takes the title. What’s left for the loser?
We won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
