Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and known as the home to the country’s ancient Gods, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour operators hope it will come with more support to protect the area’s rich biodiversity and put a fresh focus on sustainable practices.
The wider area of Mount Olympus won a nomination with unanimous support as a mixed site, a recognition of both its cultural and natural significance. Many rare and at-risk species can be found there thanks to its diverse terrain, climate, and vegetation, stemming from its elevation and proximity to the sea.
The fresh designation has been welcomed by operators — but they are quick to cite caution. International recognition is expected to bring greater tourist interest, which could contribute to the breakdown of the environment if not managed correctly.
