A gunman fired shots near the White House Saturday evening before Secret Service officers shot and fatally wounded him, said the Secret Service in a statement.
President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time.
A bystander “was also struck by gunfire,” the statement said. The gunman was at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House complex, when he drew a weapon from a bag and began firing.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 PM, triggering a lockdown at the White House that was lifted after around 45 minutes.
Reporters said they heard what sounded like dozens of gunshots. “We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now,” wrote Selina Wang, a correspondent for ABC News, on X.
